13.8V to 14.2V or so is a full charging voltage at a high idle and you don't polarize the regulator, you polarize the generator but the procedure is easiest to do at the regulator terminals and it SELDOM needs done, like almost never.

Well, whatever I did to screw up the field coils, polarizing the generator fixed the issue.
