UPDATE EMAIL ADDRESS
We went out tonight with the top off. Got the usual number of looks and smiles. At one store where I parked right in front to wait for my wife make a quick purchase several people stopped to comment. One fellow said, with a big grin, "You ought to be ashamed of yourself, that's a beautiful car." Not sure what I should be ashamed of. Usually they have stories about who they knew that had an old Thunderbird.
At another store where I went in and my wife sat in the car, some teenage boys walked by. One boy said, "Looks good, my dad designed the interior." My wife said, "Are you kidding me?" "No," he said "He works for _________ Design Co., they did the interior design. (Unfortunately she did not get the name of the design company.) "Well," she said, "I really like it, but the mirror on the visor is too small." "Yes," he smiled, "I told him the visors really suck, but what are you going to do?" Does anyone know of a design company in the Nashville area that did some work on the 2002 Bird?
It is almost as though the car makes people want to be friendly and talk. At that same store, A woman came out and commented on the car. My wife complemented her on her fine looking youngster, a lively, outgoing third grader. "Yes," she said, "My other son is in third year at college, but this one's my buddy. And a good thing too, because their father died of a heart attack not quite a year ago," with just the hint of a tear showing. At the same time a woman on the other side was starting up a conversation with the introduction, "Tight car...."
Who cares about the visors. Not us, certainly. There is something really magic about this automobile. Maybe it is the times, and a yearning for safer times. People seem to want to get close to it, talk to you. Maybe the original Thunderbird had more of an impact on our culture than I had realized.
