My 03 Bird can smoke the tires. Do you have the 02 with less torque and HP?
Lon O'Connell is correct about the rear brakes being applied. It will allso shut off the fuel to the engine if both wheels start to spin.

The traction control is a good thing on wet roads or for drivers that have not had training at a road race track. Getting a car side ways and recovering it from a slide takes practice.
The only place you can really learn how to drive a car is at the track.
